Drawing to Get Rid of The Inner Critic

I have been focusing for several years on the technical aspects of painting because I felt there was so much I needed to understand. I am at the point where I really need to allow myself the joy of painting creatively, thoroughly expressing my own style and focusing on the artistry and idea of the piece. I feel like I am trapped by the constant question in my head of “am I doing this right.” This inner critic has stifled my creativity causing me to question my capabilities and inhibit my joy. It has also decreased my productivity affecting my professional growth as well.

I am going to embark on a discipline of drawing this year in a way I have never done before and hopefully this will extend over to my personal life as well – stifling the inner critic!

How?

  • By FOCUSING on the subject (others) rather than myself – spending more time looking at my subject than my work…
  • By ASKING helpful statements like what is the shape, angle and distance rather than making unhelpful critical judgments …
  • Looking for the BEST (in others) instead of finding fault…
  • and being satisfied that good is ENOUGH!

Cityscapes – Parisian Streets

The streets of Paris have been calling to me for so long. I dream of Montmartre. In reality it will not be the image that I have in my mind, which is a good thing, but it is certainly the place of inspiration for me. I pray that our minds will always stretch above and beyond what we see or hear!

Tips for Loosening Up

Tips for loosening up

The Abstract Phase of this Painting

  1. Simplification is the key …Paint in the abstract phase without adding detail for as long as you can
  2. Remember the mood and the focal point are the emphasis, other
    things are left abstract
  3. Squint and compare everything! Squinting simplifies things naturally.
  4. Paint beyond the lines, we are not doing a coloring book.
  5. Paint with a big brush, cover broad passages simply.
  6. Paint using your full arm and the full length of the handle, we are not writing.
  7. Step back often, make sure your painting reads at a distance so it must be simple.
